I have to say that this film is one of the best movies that I have ever gotten. Don't let the nay-sayers dissuade you from giving this one a look. I promise you won't be dissapointed.
First, the storyline is brilliant. It is the very first film, I feel, to really give a proper perspective to Native American shamanism...without getting hokey and cliche. The CGI rendering of the peyote trances are breath taking, and even though many have said they are what has put people off about the film...quite honestly I don't think it would have worked without them.
Second, I truly think that Michael's performance is right up there in the greats list. His character, Wallace "Wally" Blaunt, is sinister, direly wicked, philosophical, and motivated... twisted though those motivations are. Wally is a beautifully complex character that, regardless of his killer instinct, you wind up having an odd sense of respect for by the end of the film.
One of my favorite scenes in the film is between Wally and his ratty little partner in crime, Prosit, played by a nearly unrecognizeable Eddie Izzard. The scene opens with the image of Prosit's boots as he stands in the middle of a vast desert taking a wee on a bush. Wally walks up and sends him flying into the sand saying:
"Don't you realize how hard he works to survive out here? You have no respect for life."
So, with a phenomenal cast, beautiful special effects, a gorgeously written script, and simply STAGGERING cinematography, 'Renegade' is a film that I highly recommend as a must have for any Michael fan...as well as just being a great film all around.
