Two of my favorites are 'Bewitched' and a version of 'The Lady is a Tramp' that he did with Ella Fitzgerald.....too gorgeous for words. I also love Tony Bennett and Dean Martin. You guys have to find 'The Drinking Song'.....it will crack you up.
See...I grew up with my grandparents listening to alot of really great music: Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Carl Perkins, Little Richard, Ray Charles, Billy Holiday, Count Basie, BB King, Fats Domino, Frank and the Rat Pack, etc. etc. I am very grateful to have been able to have such a rich musical education as a child.

Oh yeah, I listen to most all of the ones you listed above. You can't beat the good old stuff!! Don't I know it. There are a few newer acts that have come out that I enjoy...but they are few and far between. I like alot of the "Britpop" stuff...like Travis, Sterolab, The Music, The Verve, Robbie Williams, etc. I think one of the few decent acts to emerge on the US scene in recent years is John Mayer....fantastic voice and phenomenal storyteller. The next creature to be added to the endangered spieces list....the singer/songwriter.....where oh were have the story songs gone.

From Blessing of the Hounds "Poem"The best thing about a poem is that it's pure, it's true, it can't be f*cked with you know.
You can keep it or write it, or forget it. It's yours. The way you saw things at that moment, that second, are truly you forever and can never be taken away. When I read this one it just struck me how true it is. When you put words to paper, it's like Michael said, it's there, it's yours, no one can take it away from you. You can choose to share it or you can keep it to yourself & it's wonderful no matter what. It's a part of yourself & your emotions & how you were feeling at the time you wrote it. It can be happy or sad or angry & it's VERY theraputic. I have notebooks full of stuff I've written & probably not even a third of its I've let anyone read. Maybe I would sometime in the future. But every once in a while I'll get it out & read just to remind my self of this time or that time or something that happened, or just to put things in perspective when I'm having a bad day. I know we have some writers here, so I'm interested in hearing why you like to write & what motivates you.

I know what you mean. I have notebooks and journals that when I pull them out to look at them it seems like a lifetime ago. Some of the things I remember where I was, what life was like at that point, etc.
I have one huge tan cloth covered journal that has a lot of stuff in it from when I lived in New Orleans. I remember sitting under this huge old oak tree covered with spanish moss in the park, writing like a madwoman, and listening to my CD player...in my broomstick skirts, sandals and hippie shirts. Things were tight but I was happy. Going back over those pieces, compared to what I've been writing lately...it's interesting.
Sometimes I wonder what someone will think, sometime, somewhere down the road in the future if they uncover my stuff...how will they see me and the world that I lived in? Poems are little pieces of your soul set down in ink.
As for what motivates me to write, it pretty simple. I don't really do well communicating verbally, but when I put pen to paper, you can't shut me up. It's how I express emotions that would otherwise bottle and explode...it's how I share my heart, it's how I explain my dreams.

If someone were to read my stuff I think the first thing they would say is my god, this girl needs therapy b/c she has some serious issues. But that's just b/c I mostly write when I'm having a bad time or things aren't going so well in my life, so most of it's pretty bleak. And I'm like you, I have a hard time sitting down face to face one to one w/ people & communicating my feelings so it's a lot easier for me to just write it down. There's really only been one person that I felt comfortable sitting down & talking to, one of my friends, who's also writes (short stories/poetry) & always encouraged me to do my own writing. He always said you can tell me anything, let me read anything & I'll never judge or criticize...and he never did. I think everyone needs at least one person like that in your life...it helps you keep your sanity.

From Blessing of the Hounds: PaperIt's funny when you write on paper because each word is born like a little baby. It grows up just like a kid, depending on who reads it.
You can't help but think of all the people that put pen to paper. All the words that came out with blood and sweat and pain and joy and love and hate amid weary wonderful silence.
I just burned some hairs off my arm with a cigarette. Yeah, think about it. I wonder what Ernest was thinking when he loaded the gun.I thought this fit in perfectly with what we were discussing above about how people put all their heart & emotions into writing. Michael put it into words so eloquently!

I really feel that this is one of the best expressions on interpretation that I have ever come across. Words don't always mean the same thing to all people, whether it be on a literal or an emotional level. It is just like a kid growing up, everyone views that person differently based on personal perspective. This is quite a compelling metaphor really.
