Vice fails as crime thriller Production and plot are both lacking VICE
Starring: Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, John Cassini
Directed by: Raul Inglis
18A (frequent coarse language, violence, nudity)
Rating 1 1/2
The best thing you can say about Vice is it reinvents several elements of the crime thriller without shame.
For starters, our central hero Walker (Michael Madsen) is a deeply flawed protagonist who may look like a stock cop toughie on the outside, but actually cries in several scenes and turns his regret-filled lawman into a real human being.
Another reinvention is the decision to make Walker largely unlikable in the eye of the viewer by showing him solicit prostitutes for oral sex in the opening scene. Thanks to this introduction, it takes a while to figure out just who's the good guy and who's the bad guy in this tangle of ideas. By the time the viewer does get a handle on what's happening, we realize just about everyone in Vice is tainted, which, if we're to be generous, was probably the intention of this film written and directed by Raul Inglis.
Ditching standard moral lines is a brave move for a director because it disorients the audience and makes it difficult to empathize or identify with any specific characters. To make up for these moral boundaries that contain drama and give it direction, you really need an extra dose of tension to keep the audience engaged.
Vice tries to keep the line taut with a plot detail about a thug who escapes from a bust, and spends the rest of the film tracking Walker in the hopes of killing him off, but the story never cinches around the overall denouement and Vice ends up feeling flabby and ill-formed.
The most glaring weakness is sheer production value. The film looks amateurish as a result of poorly constructed composition, and camera angles that make you scratch your head. At one point, Madsen is giving the performance of his life, and you can barely read his facial expressions because the lighting is so inconsistent.
Daryl Hannah proved she had acting chops in Blade Runner, but at one point, during a scene between her and Walker in a car, she has all the screen presence of a mannequin.
Madsen is the only actor in the mix who actually seems to be trying. Everyone else looks like they were only too happy to camp it up -- if only to entertain themselves.
A weak film anchored by a standout performance from Madsen, Vice delivers a bad trip -- but an interesting take on character.

Thanks for the info. Sorry you couldn't get to the link of Michael. Once I'd posted it,it came up as I hoped it would. Great surprise on Sunday. There's a program on TV called Studio Portraits. As I was going out for the day I debated whether to tape it. It was on Steve McQueen. Well, I was so pleased I did tape it as a lot of the narration was done by Michael and there was my darling looking ever so sexy with a bandanna round his head.

Say it ain't so. Mr. Blonde has gone mental?
Michael Madsen, best known for playing the sadistic, ear-averse jewel thief in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, was forcibly hospitalized on Sunday after apparently going berserk and screaming at a woman in a London hotel.
According to U.K. media reports, the staff at the posh Dorchester called police after receiving complaints from guests about a disturbance coming from Madsen's room in the West End hotel.
Officers found the 49-year-old thespian "screaming and shouting" at a female companion. When Madsen refused to calm down, cops forcibly restrained him and he was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was treated for cuts and bruises before being discharged. He was not arrested.
The Hollywood tough guy, in London after wrapping work on the film The Big I Am, checked into the Dorchester on Saturday with a woman described as his wife and their 5-year-old daughter.
Madsen has been married to De Anna Morgan, his third wife, since 1996, and the couple have three children together (he has two from a previous marriage).

Michael Madsen: Whipped Posted Jun 10th 2008 10:39AM by TMZ Staff
Michael Madsen allegedly threw such a hissy fit in a schmancy London hotel room that he had to take himself ... to the hospital. And if he was in a knockdown, drag-out that he lost, the victor was a woman.
The "Kill Bill" star was staying at The Dorchester, with a woman we're told is his wife. The coppers were called after a "commotion" in his room. We're told no arrests were made but he was taken to the hospital with cuts and bruises.

GOSSIP GIRL star CHASE CRAWFORD has given an insight into MICHAEL MADSEN's recent outburst at a top London hotel - claiming someone had insulted the Hollywood tough guy's wife. Madsen was at the centre of a disturbance at London's Dorchester Hotel on Sunday (08Jun08), and was reportedly taken to hospital to be treated for cuts and bruises before being discharged. And Crawford was staying at the exclusive hotel at the same time as the Kill Bill star, and heard rumours swirling throughout the building about what prompted Madsen to lash out. He tells Britain's The Independent newspaper, "I heard around the hotel that someone had insulted his wife and that's what set him off." And the Hollywood hunk isn't surprised by the way Madsen reacted. He adds, "I've met Michael before, and I've got to say he is a little crazy and a bit of a boozer."

If it comes down to betting on a bout between 6-foot-2 actor Michael Madsen and his considerably smaller wife, DeAnna Morgan, put your money on Morgan.
Madsen, best known for playing the psychopathic Mr. Blonde in "Reservoir Dogs," was taken to a hospital after the couple had a blazing row at one of London's posh Dorchester Hotels.
Dorchester staff called police when other guests complained about the loud argument in the Madsens' room, according to British reports.
"A guest complained that all hell was breaking loose" in the couple's suite, a source told the Daily Mail. "There was a lot of screaming and shouting. It was feared they might hurt each other."
The 49-year-old Madsen was not arrested. An ambulance was called to remove the 190-pound actor, who was sporting cuts and bruises, according to reports.
Morgan, apparently, was unscathed Actor Michael Madsen was admitted to a hospital in London after he "began screaming and shouting uncontrollably," reports Britain's Daily Mail. He seems to have had a fight with his wife, DeAnna Morgan, in their room at the swanky Dorchester Hotel.
Madsen was restrained and hauled away in an ambulance, suffering from cuts and bruises. DeAnna didn't have a hair out of place. No charges were laid.
He's 49.

I was reading about that the other day, very strange and sad. I'm sure there must be an explanation for it though.

I also think it's all very strange and sad. I agree with you there. It was very interesting to notice all the different versions that were coming up in the reports in the newspapers. That's one of the reasons I posted all the different reviews to see what other members of the board thought.
